Vortex war Teil der internationalen Medienkunst-Ausstellung „Synthetic Times“ im National Art Museum of China in Beijing, an der über 40 Künstler aus 23 Ländern teilnahmen. Die Ausstellung gehörte zum kulturellen Rahmenprogramm der Olympischen Spiele 2008 in China.

Bereits von der Straße aus konnte das Leuchten der Installation wahrgenommen werden und zog die Passanten in das Gebäude. VORTEX ist eine Raum greifende, begehbare Lichtinstallation aus 240 Piktogrammen in Form eines spiralförmigen Wirbels. Die unabhängig vom kulturellen Hintergrund lesbaren Zeichen adressieren wichtige zivilisatorische Werte und Güter. Ähnlich einem gewundenen Laufband können damit Texte und Animationen dargestellt werden. Der Besucher kann die Installation von Außen betrachten, aber sich auch im Zentrum des pulsierenden Lichtstromes aufhalten, im Auge des Hurrikans aus Information und Bewegung. Die Installation thematisiert Globalisierung als beschleunigten Austausch von Waren und Ideen.

Vortex was part of the international media art exhibition „Synthetic Times“ at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, in which over 40 artists from 23 countries participated. The exhibition was part of the cultural programme of the 2008 Olympic Games in China.

The glow of the installation could already be perceived from the street and drew passers-by into the building. VORTEX is a space-consuming, walk-in light installation consisting of 240 pictograms in the form of a spiral vortex. The signs, which can be read regardless of cultural background, address important civilisational values and goods. Similar to a winding treadmill, texts and animations can be displayed with them. The visitor can view the installation from the outside, but also stay in the centre of the pulsating stream of light, in the eye of the hurricane of information and movement. The installation thematises globalisation as an accelerated exchange of goods and ideas.
