OUR HOUSE ist ein mächtiges Bild für das Leben in der Metropole Ruhr und den hier aktuell stattfindenden Strukturwandel. Gleichzeitig steht das Kunstwerk für einen hier exemplarisch praktizierten Aufbruch zu einem global dringend notwendigen Paradigmenwechsel.
Das Kunstwerk ist eine frei begehbare, temporär aufgestellte Skulptur für öffentliche Plätze im Ruhrgebiet. Das im Rahmen von #heimatruhr für das Weltkulturerbe Zollverein konzipierte Kunstwerk ist ein inspirierendes und mächtiges Bild für den Strukturwandel im Ruhrgebiet. OUR HOUSE steht aber auch für globale zivilisatorische Prozesse, wie sie in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten modellhaft hier durchdacht und umgesetzt wurden.
OUR HOUSE thematisiert den aktuellen Transformationsprozess im Ruhrgebiet. Dieser betrifft nicht nur die industrielle Entwicklung, sondern auch politische Themen wie Umweltverschmutzung, Ressourcenausbeutung, ökologische Verantwortung, Migration und Bildung. OUR HOUSE ist darüber hinaus mit seinem regionalen Hintergrund ein exemplarisches Bild für die industriellen, ökologischen und politischen Prozesse im globalen Wandel, wie sie sich weltweit in China, Ostasien, Indien und anderen Regionen der Welt beginnen.
Die Großskulptur besteht aus einer über eine Treppe begehbaren Plattform, auf der ein verglastes Haus – ähnlich einem Gewächshaus – steht. Die Glaswände sind übersät mit rot leuchtenden Piktogrammen, die das aktuelle Leben im Ruhrgebiet illustrieren. Direkt unterhalb des Hauses, nur durch einen begehbaren Glasboden getrennt, befindet sich ein zweites, gespiegeltes Haus. Dessen Wände bilden sich aus blau leuchtenden Zeichen, die die Geschichte des Ruhrgebietes adressieren. Somit steht der Besucher beim Betreten des Hauses immer zwischen beiden Welten, der aktuellen und der vergangenen. Durch eine gesteuerte LED-Beleuchtung leuchten die Zeichen in unregelmäßigen Abständen auf, kombinieren sich immer wieder neu und erzeugen so den visuellen Effekt eines rot glühenden und blau flackernden Kohlefeuers.
Auch die Umsetzung der Skulptur zeigt den technologischen Wandel. Während die Konstruktion aus schweren verzinkten Stahlprofilen ausgeführt wird, die früher von der hier ansässigen Schwerindustrie produziert wurden, nutzt die digital animierte und transparent leuchtend Gebäudehaut CNC-Fertigungsmethoden, neuestes LED-Licht und Steuerungstechnik.
Das Projekt startet in avisierter Kooperation mit der Stiftung Zollverein (siehe Begleitschreiben) auf dem Forum vor der Rolltreppe zum Ruhrmuseum auf dem Welterbe Zollverein und soll anschließend durch weitere große Städte der Metropole Ruhr wandern und dort auf gut besuchten Plätzen präsentiert werden. Dazu werden Kooperationen mit dem Schauspielhaus Bochum, dem HMKV im Dortmunder U und dem Lehmbruck-Museum in Duisburg angestrebt. Im Anschluss soll ein Ort gefunden werden, an dem die Skulptur dauerhaft verbleiben kann.

The artwork is a freely accessible, temporarily installed sculpture for public places in the Ruhr region. Conceived as part of #heimatruhr for the Zollverein World Heritage Site, the artwork is an inspiring and powerful image for structural change in the Ruhr region. But OUR HOUSE also stands for global civilising processes, as they have been thought through and implemented here in an exemplary way in the past decades.
OUR HOUSE focuses on the current transformation process in the Ruhr region. This not only concerns industrial development, but also political issues such as environmental pollution, exploitation of resources, ecological responsibility, migration and education. Furthermore, OUR HOUSE, with its regional background, is an exemplary image for the industrial, ecological and political processes in global change as they are beginning worldwide in China, East Asia, India and other regions of the world.
The large sculpture consists of a platform accessible via a staircase, on which a glazed house – similar to a greenhouse – stands. The glass walls are covered with red glowing pictograms illustrating current life in the Ruhr region. Directly below the house, separated only by a walkable glass floor, is a second, mirrored house. Its walls are made up of blue luminous signs that address the history of the Ruhr region. Thus, on entering the house, the visitor is always caught between the two worlds, the present and the past. Through controlled LED lighting, the signs light up at irregular intervals, recombining again and again to create the visual effect of a red glowing and blue flickering coal fire.
The implementation of the sculpture also shows the technological change. While the construction is made of heavy galvanised steel profiles that used to be produced by the heavy industry located here, the digitally animated and transparently glowing building skin uses CNC production methods, the latest LED lighting and control technology.
The project will be launched in cooperation with the Zollverein Foundation (see accompanying letter) on the forum in front of the escalator to the Ruhr Museum on the Zollverein World Heritage Site and will then travel through other large cities in the Metropole Ruhr and be presented there in well-visited places. To this end, cooperation is being sought with the Schauspielhaus Bochum, the HMKV in the Dortmunder U and the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg. Afterwards, a place will be found where the sculpture can remain permanently.
