Die Skulptur R/EVOLUTION bezieht sich in Form und Geometrie auf die beiden Wendeltreppen im Inneren des Gebäudes, die täglich von den hier arbeitenden Forschern begangen werden.
Jedoch ist die Treppe der Skulptur zu Beginn, einer Rampe gleich, nur sehr langsam ansteigend und bequem begehbar. Am Ende wird sie zunehmend steiler mit Treppenstufen, die nur noch mit großer Anstrengung zu erklimmen sind. Mit jeder Stufe wird die Steigung um 1cm erhöht. Auf Platzniveau beginnend werden nach 56 Stufen mit einer Stufenhöhe von dann 56cm fast die Attika des Gebäudes erreicht.
Die zunehmende Progression und Ausgesetztheit im Treppenlauf wird durch die Gestaltung der Konstruktion aufgenommen und weitergeführt. Im unteren gut zu begehenden Bereich werden die Stufen und das Geländer solide und sicher ausgeführt, im oberen zunehmend steileren Lauf wird die Ausführung zunehmend provisorischer und exponierter, um schließlich als Work in Progress unfertig zu enden. Das Standrohr schließt auf der Augenhöhe der Nutzer auf der obersten Etage in 14.60m ab, einige Stufen führen noch ungesichert weiter in die Höhe.
DIE IDEE GEHT DER TAT VORAN
Entlang des Geländers läuft ein Lichtband, das schneller ansteigt als die Stufen. Zeigt es sich am Tag in schlichtem Rotorange, so leuchtet es am Abend auf und illuminiert gleichzeitig die Treppe. Durch das steuerbare RGB-LED-Licht kann die Farbe des Leuchtbandes ähnlich zu den Farben des Pioneer-Campus von Orange über Rot, Magenta zu Violett verändert und animiert werden. Innenseite und Außenseite des Bandes sind dabei getrennt steuerbar.
Die gesamte Skulptur wird aus Stahl S235 gefertigt und im Werk dickbeschichtet. Nach der Montage erfolgt eine hochwertige Endlackierung mit einem zweikomponentigen Metallic-Lack. Dabei werden die Stufen in mehreren Silberschattierung in einer unregelmäßiger Abfolge beschichtet. Handlauf und Geländer sind aus Edelstahl gefertigt.
FORSCHEN / WACHSEN / SYNERGIE
Von Evolution zur Revolution: nach der kosmischen „Evolution“ der Materie und der biologischen Evolution des Lebens auf der Erde, entsteht durch die menschliche Zivilisation das neue Zeitalter des Anthropozän. Auf der Grundlage von systematischer und rationaler Forschung entwickeln sich eine Reihe von Revolutionen, zuerst in den Wissenschaften, in der Folge in der Technologie, in der Industrie, in der Bevölkerung, in der Gesellschaft und jetzt in der Kybernetik. Durch wechselseitige Befruchtung, Synergien und nicht zuletzt Finanzierung entstand und entsteht weiterhin ein beispielloses, allumfassendes, dynamisches, ja explosives Wachstum an Wissen, Techniken, Gütern, Wohlstand, Menschen samt ihren Begleiterscheinungen.
Die vorgeschlagene Skulptur R/EVOLUTION will diese Situation in ein emotional erlebbares und sich kognitiv unmittelbar erschließendes Kunstwerk transformieren. Dazu referiert die Skulptur auf archetypische Formen, wie die Spirale, die Treppe, die Schraubenlinie sowie die Exponentialkurve um diese zu einem einmaligen und monumentalen Bild zu verdichten.
Verschiedene Aspekte können assoziiert werden, die ganz besonders auf den Pioneer-Campus zutreffen:
+ das individuelle Wachsen des einzelnen Forschers, von den ersten vorsichtigen Schritten über das abgesichertes Wissen bis zu den kühnen Schritten in ungesichertes Neuland.
+ das langsame und mühsame Beginnen von größeren Forschungsprojekten und die Fahrt, die im Laufe des Prozesses aufgenommen wird, und fast immer mit unsicherem Ausgang.
+ das Ineinandergreifen von einzelnen Akteuren, Disziplinen, Forschungseinrichtungen – symbolisch in den Stufen abgebildet – die sich synergetisch ergänzen und gegenseitig beschleunigen.
+ Wissen und Forschung im Allgemeinen, wie sie sich historisch über die letzten Jahrtausende und Jahrhunderte kontinuierlich, Stufe für Stufe, Erkenntnis für Erkenntnis aufgebaut hat.
+ und darüber hinaus, wie schon angesprochen, der geochronologische Übergang vom Holozän zum Anthropozän, wie wir ihn gerade erleben.
SYNOPSIS
Mit seinem universalistischen und kosmologischen Ansatz ist die Skulptur nicht nur ein würdiges Bild für das Forscherleben von Hermann von Helmholtz selbst, sondern insgesamt ein starkes Symbol für die Forschungsgemeinschaft der Helmholtz-Gesellschaft mit ihren vielen zukunftsweisenden Disziplinen. Darüber hinaus etabliert sie auf dem Campusgelände durch die Farbgebung eine unverwechselbare (Land-) Marke für die hier wirkenden Human-Science-Pioneers, die engagiert und verantwortlich zu den Zukunftsbausteinen der Menschheit beitragen.

The sculpture R/EVOLUTION refers in form and geometry to the two spiral staircases inside the building, which are used daily by the researchers working here.
However, at the beginning the staircase of the sculpture, like a ramp, only rises very slowly and is comfortable to walk on. At the end, it becomes increasingly steep with steps that can only be climbed with great effort. Increases the gradient by 1 cm with each step. THE IDEA PRECEDES THE DEED
A light band runs along the railing, rising faster than the steps. While it appears in a simple reddish orange during the day, it lights up in the evening and illuminates the stairs at the same time. Thanks to the controllable RGB LED light, the colour of the strip light can be changed and animated from orange to red, magenta to violet, similar to the colours of the Pioneer campus. The inside and outside of the band can be controlled separately.
The entire sculpture is made of S235 steel and thickly coated at the factory. After assembly, a high-quality final coating is applied using a two-component metallic lacquer. The steps are coated in several shades of silver in an irregular sequence. Handrail and railing are made of stainless steel.
RESEARCH / GROWTH / SYNERGY
From evolution to revolution: after the cosmic „evolution“ of matter and the biological evolution of life on earth, the new age of the Anthropocene is emerging through human civilisation. On the basis of systematic and rational research, a series of revolutions are developing, first in the sciences, subsequently in technology, in industry, in population, in society and now in cybernetics. Through cross-fertilisation, synergies and, last but not least, financing, an unprecedented, all-encompassing, dynamic, even explosive growth of knowledge, techniques, goods, wealth, people and their companions has emerged and continues to emerge.
The proposed sculpture R/EVOLUTION aims to transform this situation into a work of art that can be experienced emotionally and is immediately accessible cog-nitively. To this end, the sculpture refers to archetypal forms such as the spiral, the staircase, the helical line and the exponential curve in order to condense them into a unique and monumental image.
Various aspects can be associated that are particularly applicable to the Pioneer Campus:
+ the individual growth of the individual researcher, from the first cautious steps through secured knowledge to the bold steps into unsecured new territory.
+ the slow and laborious beginning of larger research projects and the speed at which they are taken up in the course of the process, and almost always with an uncertain outcome.
+ the interlocking of individual actors, disciplines, research institutions – symbolically depicted in the stages – which synergistically complement and accelerate each other.
+ knowledge and research in general, as it has built up historically over the last millennia and centuries continuously, stage by stage, insight by insight.
+ and beyond that, as already mentioned, the geochronological transition from the Holocene to the Anthropocene, as we are currently experiencing it.
SYNOPSIS
With its universalistic and cosmological approach, the sculpture is not only a worthy image of the research life of Hermann von Helmholtz himself, but also a strong symbol overall for the research community of the Helmholtz Association with its many forward-looking disciplines. In addition, the colour scheme establishes an unmistakable (land) brand on the campus grounds for the human science pioneers working here, who are committed and responsible contributors to the future building blocks of humanity.
